2013

November 2013

Our Fall show Love, Sex and Laguna Woods Village was a rousing success! We sold almost 1500 tickets and 200 DVDs. We heard nothing but rave reviews from the audience. Many people contributed to put on what I firmly believe was our best show ever. Between the cast and crew we had almost 100 people involved. It takes a village--- Laguna Woods Village! If you want your DVD, it's ready for pickup on Friday, 11/8 at CH 3 at 10am-12pm, 2 pm-4 pm, or 6 pm-7 pm.

Our meeting in November on 21st will be our first ever joint meeting with The Old Pros. Please note that this event will NOT be at CH7 due to limited seating. It will be held at Clubhouse 3 in the auditorium. The entertainment for the meeting will be a production by students of the Directing and Acting class taught by Jeanne Sanner, and jointly sponsored by the Theatre Guild and The Old Pros. There will be two short plays followed by a social gathering in the lobby with complimentary snacks, wine and soda.

Dues for 2014 will be collected at the meeting, $15 per member, or $25 per couple. You can also send your dues, with a check payable to Theater Guild, to Ann Guenther at 955E Aragon, Laguna Woods.

Please note there is NO meeting in December. We will kick off the New Year with the January Jubilee on Sunday, January 19 at CH 6.

Need show of support at GRF

We are being summoned once again to the Rec. Board meeting on Wednesday August 21st at 1:30 in the Board room of then Administration building, they have us on the agenda for discussion, and I have been told that it would be advisable for us to show up in strength, so once more we ask you to back us up if we are to accomplish our goals of getting a dedicated room of our own, I know this takes time but we have to keep up the pressure. Thanks for your loyalty.

Our friend Paulette Schlecter

We are so sad to report that Paulette Schlechter passed away peacefully on August 7. We send our condolences to her sisters Eveline, Jacqueline and family. Paulette was larger than life and our memories of her will always be larger than life. She was a big friend of the Theatre Guild and a tireless stage manager, right up to the latest production for Theater Guild. She received the First Annual Special Recognition Award presented by Terry Fiset, after "Odd Couple" wrapped.

I'm sure she is up in heaven right now, telling God how to run things. And she is probably right!

Theatre Guild June 2013

WE HAD A SMASH HIT FOR THE RECORDS! Congratulations to the cast and crew of the "Odd Couple" for an all-round fabulous and impeccable presentation. Comedy is timing, and timing is everything when it comes to a Neil Simon—and the cast & crew were spot-on-time and at their best! Terry Fiset, Director, and Bill Brown, Producer, deserve credit for this hilarious event. Audience reaction was exuberant, and post-show “chatter” was enthusiastic. Everyone is eagerly awaiting our next production.

On June 20th at 6:45 pm, our June General Meeting entertainment will feature Karaoke from YOU, our members. You have to entertain us for a change. Please bring your own CD of the song you will sing. Call Sue Brown at 837-3663 to be included in the program.

Our Nomination Committee will be looking for new Directors for the Theatre Guild Board of Directors for the upcoming year, starting in January, 2014. If you are interested, please call Estra Shaffer at 768-8189. We’ve made great strides this year—let’s keep that positive momentum going with new, dedicated Directors and lots of new ideas and opinions.

April 2013

ON APRIL 18th, JOIN US FOR AN EVENING OF ONE-ACT PLAYS. Plus, A BONUS SCENE FROM THE ODD COUPLE (FEMALE VERSION).

It’s Hell Gettin’ Old -- very, very funny! Bob Powell directs Ed Hayes, Joel Breding and Fred Jonas as they play three senior men reminiscing about their lives. Audiences cannot contain their laughter as they recognize themselves in these hapless characters, who either have trouble hearing each other or trouble remembering what they want to say.

Welcome to Acceptance -- a bank robber who specializes in small-town banks runs into a teller who thinks he's a hoot - after all he is wearing pantyhose on his head! Director Estra Shaffer says she is excited to work with two brand new and very talented Theatre Guild members - Steve Horowitz and Susan Kelleher. (see photo to left)

Also feature a sneak preview of The Odd Couple (female version)with Terry Fiset, Benji Johnson, Ed Hayes and Lewis Marcus doing the highly comedic scene from the dinner-party between Olive and Florence (Oscar Madison and Felix Unger) and the Spaniards who live upstairs. Estelle Dinunzio, Sue Brown, Barb Powell, and Lenore Levan will set up the action with a preview of their very funny Trivial Pursuit game.

March 2013

Plans for the March 21st meeting feature two ONE-ACT plays. At 6:45 in Clubhouse 7 will feature: "All the Comforts of Home" -- a charming counterfeiter and two senior ladies. Directed by Carol Glenn Shallin and Sue Brown. Three senior ladies (Marge Barrett, Joan Laing, and Cecile Unatin) run an ad in the newspaper to rent a room in their small home. Cast includes Bill Brown, Vicki Robbins, and Benji Johnson.

"At Halftime" -- a basketball coach needs to turn things around at halftime. “At Half Time” is an award-winning senior theatre production directed by Kate Jacobs that will leave audiences laughing out loud. The cast includes Ed Hayes, Benji Johnson, Estelle DiNunzio, Lenore Levan, Susan Kelleher, and Bonnie Morris. Hilarity ensues during "At Half Time" when the ladies of the "over-60" basketball team are berated by their coach, who is beside himself that the ladies are down 56-3 at half time against a group of nuns.

Everyone is welcome to come enjoy the comedy and support neighbors who have worked (and played) hard to make these shows a hit! Auditions for our Spring comedy

General meeting featured the "Our Funny Valentine" show. Members and guests were treated to several very funny vignettes highlighting the "realities of romance." In one of the skits, Bob and Barb Powell meet for a blind date where Bob announces his intention to make use of the contents of his little square packet before the night is over. Things get funny fast, until Barb learns he's talking about "Alka Seltzer." Theatre Guild urges anyone interested in great fun working with a team of super people to try out for the shows. No prior acting experience is required. Welcome to our new member, Kate Jacobs, who is not a stranger to Theater Guild. Kate performed last year in our Spring play, “You Can’t Take It With You.” One of our members, Betty Christensen, passed away. Her husband, Ted Christensen, is one of our "Amigos," who builds sets for the Theater Guild and the Old Pros. Ted and his wife are, not only two of the sweetest people I have ever met, but Ted and I are also from Michigan and share many memories.
